Notice Regarding Court Operations during COVID-19 Virus Outbreak

Clerk’s Office Intake Counter

Effective immediately, the Hale Boggs Federal Building located at 500 Poydras Street, New Orleans, Louisiana, which houses the United States Bankruptcy Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana, is closed to the general public. United States District Court, Eastern District of Louisiana - Amended General Order No. 20.5.  The Bankruptcy Court is operating with a minimal skeletal crew on Wednesdays to perform critical mission responsibilities.  The entire staff will be on telework status and can be reached by dialing 504-589-7878.  CM/ECF will continue to be available for electronic filing.

Self-Represented Individuals Filing for Bankruptcy

Emergency bankruptcy petitions for individuals may be filed electronically by accessing the following link:  https://www.laeb.uscourts.gov/sites/laeb/files/EmergencyPetition.pdf.  You must also complete and file Official Form 121 Statement About Your Social Security Numbers separate from your petition.  This form can be accessed here https://www.laeb.uscourts.gov/sites/laeb/files/B121SocialSecurity.pdf.

Cases filed through these procedure will be opened and may be further administered when the office resumes normal operations.  Filing fees for self-represented individual bankruptcy petitions will also be temporarily deferred until the office resumes normal operations.  Once the office resumes normal operations the filing fees will be due and deficiency notices will be issued for filing fees and any missing information.

Section 341 Meetings

Per COVID-19 Temporary Emergency Procedures issued by the United States Trustee for the Eastern District of Louisiana, cases in which the debtor does not have an attorney, the debtor must contact the trustee by telephone at least three (3) days prior to the section 341 meeting to get instructions for the procedure to verify the debtor’s identity by video or other means.

In the event that verification of the identity of debtor or the social security number is not possible, the meeting will be continued to another time and date.

 

Temporary Office Hours

Until further notice the Hale Boggs Federal Building is closed to the general public.
A clerk’s office employee can be reached by phone at 504-589-7878, Monday – Friday between the hours of 8:30am and 4:30pm.
We anticipate a large volume of calls.  If a clerk’s office representative does not immediately answer your call, please leave a message and someone will contact you as soon as possible.

 

Pursuant to Amended General Order 2020-2 dated April 3, 2020, all hearings in this District will take place by teleconference, or by videoconference when necessary, until further notice. Hearings may not be unofficially recorded, photographed, broadcasted, or transmitted. This prohibition applies in all cases in this District.
